Saturday 28th March

Austrees is heading to Sydney on Monday for Grandmotherly duties for the 2nd grandson due at any time. So, before the departure, something to do together -why -find some geocaches. So that is why we ended up here at Fred's Place aka Ross Creek Cafe. What a great area for overnight stays. Didn't have time for some food, but it sounded great. This is one time to have a number of favourite points to give away. This deserves one. When I get more, I probably won't remember it.

Onto Tin Can Bay, for coffee and three caches. This was the first of them. Now who would think to put a cache outside a cop shop, but they did; so Cop This.

I know we're Sparrows, but that didn't help us at Between two Birds. This where a person should trust their instincts. I went to GZ first up and said this is the obvious place. But no, I searched where the Garmin said GZ was. So it wasn't til austrees went back to the initial point and said to search a bit better. Between the birds is a good name.

Crab Pot Creek This was a DNF. There were a few muggles around trying to catch fish and not succeeding. Crabs were certainly not the go. Searched high and low.

Well, we're heading to Rainbow Beach. On the way is Cooloola Cove and Billabong Park. We parked in the shopping centre in the shade and walked to GZ. Good hint which took us from the GPS GZ to the actual GZ. The geo grandkids would have been thrilled as we disturbed 4 ducks in the billabong.

Still on the way to Rainbow Beach, and we pass by Pipe Clay and All the Zeros. We're in the Golf, and it isn't going off road for anything. A track around the sewerage plant on the eastern side gets to the former; and one near the latter that could be used as a parking area.

Out onto the Rainbow Beach Rd and Seary's Creek. One of the things abut geo-caching that always amazes me is how people find these gems. Beautiful clear water flowing after the recent rains, rainbow fish (had them in the fishtank in Brisbane) and grass trees and burnt stumps and tree trunks. The vegetation was rather thick but there were clearings and geotrails galore. I was taking so much time that austrees came to help. Unfortunately no luck – too well hidden. I rarely post DNFs, but this one I will. It is worthy of a favourite point.

Rainbow Beach has changed considerably since we were here last when friends of ours had a house here – many more food outlets. After driving around, we settled for some local fish, but no chips. Back to caching, we headed for Stairway to Heaven. A number of tracks were closed for rehabilitation of the dunes. Heading upwards, there were some steps, labelled “Stairway to” Aha. Along the track, it was the eagle eyes of austrees who saw a faint track to some sand. Climbing the rear of the blow was a cinch. Finding the cache was unremarkable.

Getting back to the car. Now I wanted to go down the steep and long sand hill. Austrees was hesitant but finally succumbed. At the bottom, her comments “Exhilarating” It reminded her of her childhood using cardboard to slide down a creek bank in Brisbane. A search for an easy way down to the beach was found and a pleasant walk back to the Surf Club.

Onto Thar She Blows. This is where having all the details in the GPS helps. We made the decision to go caching late on Friday. I didn't have time to download a pocket query. Downloading the info directly does not get all of it. It was a simple find once the hint had been seen. The Carlo Sand Blow is magnificent. We had been here before but not by the walking track. We climbed the rear of the blow that time.

And so concluded a day of geo-caching. I do not know how some manage find a hundred in a day.
