Saturday 27th September

Austrees and I were out and about today to take the geodog for exercise and to test my new GPS - a Garmin  GPSMAP 78s. Where better than the West Cooroy Forest where I am mapping it for the Fire Brigade and where austrees had logged some caches back in Feb/Mar 14.

The 78s was spot on for Wellington No 1 but not for Wellington 1 The caches in the Forest are nearly completely "drive by" with 4wd vehicles - in the wet some tracks are impassable, and there is no way to drive from the southern side to the northern. The only route by vehicle is to get out of the forest, drive to the opposite side by bitumen road and re-enter.

Wellington 1 followed on from Wellington No 1. The car was left on the Central driveway and the dog, Austrees and I walked to the cache. On the way, timber pirates had left their mark - quite a number of stringybarks had been fallen, presumably for fence posts.
Not only was the 78s about 10m out to the N, but I had forgotten a pen. Not all was lost, for there was plenty of charcoal around. You have heard of Clancy of the Overflow and "was written with a thumb nail dipped in tar" - the log book was completed using charcoal.
